Drained (Poem #24, NaPoWriMo 2024)

By Daniel Paiz

Sometimes you just need to chill out, relax, take a break, because you are drained. Too often these days there’s an obsession with being busy, with being “productive”. If you’re tired, you aren’t always going to create something that turns out how you wanted to. This NaPoWriMo entry is going to dig into this just a little bit.

Drained

Palest white you’ve ever seen to the point one might not bleed,

oh wait, you just have stony coral tissue loss disease,

scratch that I’m just floatin’ through this ocean of mystery or so it seems,

trying not to drown in mundane mediocrity.

Truth is ideas and creativity stay bubbling,

but daily needs and “responsibility” drains life force, so befuddling,

it can require working harder,

it might need some sacrifice.

Instead of losing sleep to mindless distractions,

one could stay restless when burning oil only made at midnight.

It takes time,

a balancing act between patience and needing to move along,

effort is better than perfection,

the longer one waits to start,

the longer one’s drained of color and light, colder than permafrost.
