Siren Song (NaPoWriMo 9/30 for 2026)

By Daniel Paiz

There is a haunting beauty to the sounds and lyrics of one singer by the name of Enya. Her songs pull you in and have multiple emotions active simultaneously. There’s a soothing and mindful feel to begin, and yet there’s a yearning, a longing, almost a brooding wanting in place as well. NaPoWriMo isn’t for analyzing lyrics, but taking inspiration from other artists is certainly part of the process.

“Caribbean Blue” is the song coming to mind first for Enya. It feels like a modern-day siren song of sorts. So much so that it inspires this writer to scribble about it.

Siren Song

Subtle differences all at once,

quietly pulled in and grasped with no chance of escape,

there’s soothing yet yearning entering m’ears today,

what magic is this anyway?

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Winds from all directions do not help me adjust,

what is this longing I have,

a solution for this is firmly a must,

yet I lay my eyes upon the vessel of enchanting crux.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

No serpentine figure before me,

no Gorgon-like hair,

eyes flickering flames earnestly mixing strength with care,

this being has called me in with tunes pleasant for every ear.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Blind to my own misogyny, her justice has me floating but not in air,

starboard appropriate as I contort here,

the last lights I’ll lay eyes on upon this night,

are the speckles of stars dancing along the waves tonight.
