Sitting Solo (Poem #3, NaPoWriMo 2024)

By Daniel Paiz

Writing in nearly every form has rules one is expected to follow. There are patterns to imitate and learn as well when it comes to poetry. Often times those rules are to be learned so then one knows how to break them. However, institutionalizing prose, art, poetry, etc. is really a way to create barriers to entry.

There are some patterns and whatnot followed below, but frankly it is done because it sounds good to the writer, and not so much to flex any poetic knowledge in terms of rules. Rhyming is a challenge and yet an escape route for those interested in poetry. NaPoWriMo is one such method with which you can determine which of those paths you’d like to take, especially when sitting solo.

Sitting Solo

Rippin’ penicillin from some surgical equipment,

to improve the effects of a blunt force trauma instrument,

this evening is not what I expected to be penning.

gerrymandering,

if one wishes to increase the level of violence,

in defiance of the realities each person faces,

when really wanting to reminisce jumpin’ rope next to fire hydrants,

it’s that nostalgia.

that remembering good things beyond a scale that was plausible,

but recalling at a high level what trauma unfolded to add to our mind boggle,

shouldn’t be possible.

and yet our minds are allegedly doing those things to protect us,

but instead aim the blasters at ourselves since we’re our own worse agenda,

life isn’t horrendous,

copasetic or antiseptics, no right way to best defend this plaintiff,

this is rich.

The overstimulating, discombobulating, masochistic,

deranged scrolling to mere meanings of narcissism mixed with animalistic,

vanity.

So one has to sit there and ponder,

what about they want to bother about,

past doubt, no chase of clout, disconnect from this very thing.

Sitting solo with self is back in fashion, please do it daily.
