Life Cycles (NaPoWriMo 15/30 for 2026)

By Daniel Paiz

One of the challenges of writing 30 poems in 30 days in figuring out what kinds of topics to write about. For those of you like me who don’t seek out prompts but instead fish around for words, days like today can be a challenge. I allowed myself to be open, as no ideas really came to mind.

I would say I allowed myself to be bored. Boredom is something that as kids we thought was bad or not helpful. However, sitting with one’s thoughts and also just being in the moment allows things to surface. Worries, lists, and other aspects of life swirl in our heads. However, sometimes words arrive for us just in time. Today, for whatever reason, the opening line came to me as I peered out the window into the world. That got the words a flowing.

Life Cycles

Sunshine slips between ironclad blinds,

reminding the self-contained that outside is the best light,

daywalker one might become, observing such rays,

directed to better ends than sources of crimson splayed,

pause that thought,

shift into that spacious and cavernous view,

when one’s mind shows you exist but question this myth,

there’s background and lore you’ve lived so far,

but also experiences you deflect as

shadows with scars,

no purpose to revisit when lessons pummeled

still reflect bruise,

shades are where one has an idea of where light returns,

yearning that occasionally pops up when passing by urns,

a day in the life consists of spectrum of feelings and a breeze,

that reminder that cycles despite our disdain do repeat.

P.S.

If you are a reader from Hong Kong, Singapore, or other places known for feeding content into chatgpt and ai whatnot but you’re actually here to read and enjoy these words, thank you. If you are someone in one of these places or anywhere else in that world that just feeds content into chatgpt to teach your programs or whatever, you are AWFUL. Stop doing that. Frankly y’all can’t write like me primarily because you haven’t lived my life. I haven’t lived yours. So there. AI stuff sucks. These words are direct from my odd mind. Thanks all.
