I Watch Sports (NaPoWriMo 22/30 for 2026)

By Daniel Paiz

Sometimes a favorite hobby or activity of ours can be seen as a person’s whole personality. Depending on what it is, that can be good or bad. However, for the person being perceived that way, it ideally doesn’t matter to them too much. Poetry is one of many outlets to dig deeper into oneself as well as the world around them.

I Watch Sports but it isn’t the entire picture.

I Watch Sports

I watch sports for the no-look, behind the back Jokic pass,

defying expectations despite all big fella has done

and the ball IQ he wrath,

I watch sports to see the motor going of Nate the Great

outdogging visitors upon the dangerous glass,

same stoic look as the man aforementioned,

playing with effort rarely ever questioned,

and I ask myself,

am I watching sports to witness history,

not process misery, distract from the thoughts in thee head,

shrink from non-shooting fouls of life to deter questions of cred?

then a song comes along to address what’s been said.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I’m waiting for someone to put me together,

I’m waiting for someone to push me away,

and then it clicks from Vertical Horizon’s 2000s hit,

I watch sports because I would like to witness teamwork,

I watch sports because I’d like to witness camraderie,

I watch sports because effort and energy contort to lead to ideal outcomes

that outside the game feel way harder to achieve and afford,

That’s not to say I don’t have the capacity

to efficiently energize who I can be,

I watch sports because these idealized storylines allow an outlet

in this miserable dystopian world

not practicing what is told to youths who wear these big star’s tees.
