Fading Away (NaPoWriMo 29/30 for 2026)

By Daniel Paiz

Time is a double-edged sword if you think about it. Pain tends to heal over time; however, the face and the looks of loved ones begin to merge, scramble, and slightly fade away. It seems like it shouldn’t happen so quickly, but it does.

Poetry helps to slow some fading, as it brings to light what one was seeing. Remembering those feelings and how one is impacted is the truest sense of memory. Makes the process not leave one in such dismay.

Fading Away

There are looks,

moments of laughter, of smiles,

but the face is no longer in focus like it once was.

There are memories associated with the most random things,

and those ties won’t likely falter anytime soon.

True that time heals wounds,

but it also removes what seemed forever views,

moments and reflections,

that seemed all too consumed.

Pictures flicker,

Faces lose distinction,

though the feelings and beliefs stay the same,

what was, isn’t important,

what mark left, is the beauty and pain.
